Why Is My Dishwasher Draining Into The Sink?

When the dishwasher runs and the sink fills with gray water, the drain is blocked somewhere downstream. The location of the clog decides the fix.

The Short Answer

Your dishwasher and your kitchen sink share a drain, usually through the garbage disposal. When water backs up into the sink as the dishwasher drains, something downstream is blocked. The most common cause is a clogged disposal or sink trap. A new disposal installed without removing its knockout plug is another classic, and a kinked drain hose or a clogged air gap can do it too.

Start with the easiest checks: run the disposal, look at the air gap, and check the hose. If those do not help, the clog is deeper in the sink drain or the branch line, and it needs a cable or a jetter.

Safe Checks You Can Do Today

Turn off power to the disposal and the dishwasher before you reach under the sink. Never put a hand in the disposal.

  • Turn off the disposal switch and unplug it or switch off its breaker.
  • Remove standing water from the sink with a cup or wet vacuum so you can see the drain.
  • Look into the disposal with a flashlight and remove visible debris with tongs.
  • If the disposal is new, check for the dishwasher knockout plug at the side inlet. If the plug is still there, the dishwasher cannot drain through it.
  • If your sink has an air gap on the counter, lift the cap and clear any buildup.
  • Restore power, run cold water, and test with a short dishwasher cycle.

How The Plumbing Is Arranged

Most dishwashers drain through a hose that runs to a port on the side of the garbage disposal, or to a fitting on the sink tailpiece if there is no disposal. That means a clog in the disposal, the sink trap, or the pipe beyond has nowhere to send the dishwasher's water except back into the sink.

Many installations loop the drain hose up under the countertop, which is called a high loop, or use an air gap on the counter. Both are meant to keep dirty sink water from flowing back into the dishwasher.

Dishwasher drain connections fall under the California Plumbing Code, which is based on the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC), so ask your installer how your kitchen was set up. A hose that has slipped out of its loop or an air gap that has clogged can cause the symptoms above.

Air Gap Or High Loop

Two methods keep sink water from flowing back into the dishwasher. Which one your kitchen has affects where to look first.

Air gap on the counter

  • A small cylinder beside the faucet.
  • Can clog with food debris and then spit water.
  • Easy to lift and clean.
  • Common where local rules call for it.

High loop under the counter

  • The drain hose rises to the underside of the counter.
  • No visible part above the sink.
  • Can slip out of its clip and sag.
  • Check by looking inside the cabinet.

If The Basic Checks Do Not Work

Trap

Place a bucket and clean the sink trap under the basin.

Hose

Detach the drain hose and run water through it to check for blockage.

Line

If water still stands, the branch line is clogged and needs cabling.

Call

A plumber can clear the line and test the dishwasher connection.

Habits That Prevent The Problem

Scrape plates first

Food solids and grease are the usual clog makers. Scrape rather than rinse them down.

Run the disposal before the dishwasher

A few seconds of grinding with cold water clears the connection before the cycle starts.

Skip grease and coffee grounds

Grease coats the pipe, and grounds pack tightly in the trap.

Keep the air gap clean

Lift the cap now and then and wipe out the cylinder.

Why Older Kitchens Have More Trouble

Kitchen drains in older homes carry decades of grease, and the pipe walls narrow even when the center looks open. Cast iron and galvanized drain lines are rough inside, and soap scale builds up faster on them than on smooth plastic.

A new dishwasher or disposal can expose the problem. The appliance works fine, but it now pushes more water into a drain that was already marginal. If a quick fix lasts only a few weeks, ask for a camera look, because the footage shows grease buildup, roots, and offset joints that a cable cannot reveal. Ask for a copy of the video for your records.

When To Call For Help

If your checks point to the disposal, our page on garbage disposal repair and installation explains repair and replacement. If the sink and other drains are slow, drain cleaning clears the branch line. Leaks under the sink around the faucet or traps fall under faucet and sink repair.

Homes in Pico Rivera and other mid-century neighborhoods often have kitchen drain lines that are decades old, and a pipe with years of grease on its walls clogs again quickly after a quick fix.

Dishwasher And Sink Questions

The dishwasher and sink share a drain. When that drain is blocked, the dishwasher's water comes back up through the sink.

A small plastic plug in the dishwasher inlet of a new disposal. It must be removed so the dishwasher can drain through the disposal.

No. Running it repeatedly floods the sink and may push dirty water back into the dishwasher. Clear the clog first.

Lift the cap off the small cylinder on the counter and clear the buildup inside with a brush. Rinse and replace the cap.

Yes. A clog in the branch line or main can send dishwasher water back up. If other drains are slow, the problem is deeper.

Chemical cleaners can damage older pipes and disposals, and they rarely clear a grease and food clog. A cable or jetter works better.
